|
Renewable energy is set to be the most rapidly growing area of the energy
sector as countries across the world seek to reduce emissions of
carbon dioxide in order to combat climate change. |
|
|
In April 2002, the UK Government introduced the Renewables Obligation. The
proportion of electricity supplies covered by this obligation rises year by
year - it is set at 4.9% for 2004/2005, rising to 10.4% in 2010/11 and 15.4% by 2015/16.
To place this in context, a 1% increase in electricity supplied requires an investment
of at least 1100 MW of onshore wind at a capital cost of around £825m. This compares
with installed wind capacity of 890 MW at the end of 2004. |
